China keeps U19 World Championship hopes up with J. Dong/T. Hang’s win

 
Nanjing, China, July 13, 2018 – China’s Dong Jie/Hang Ting delighted their home fans with a 2-0 (22-20, 21-19) finish against Bolivia’s Maria Fernanda Canedo/Nicole Alessandra Nogales, making the women’s quarterfinals cut in the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships at the Tangshan International Beach Sports Park.



Pairs from seven other different nations, including Canada, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the United States advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday.

Canada’s Erika Vermette/Dana Roskic endured a tough 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-11) encounter with Germany’s Lea Sophie Kunst/Anna-Lena Grune, while USA’s Devon Newberry/Lindsey Sparks outlasted Spain’s Aina Munar/Sofia Gonzalez 2-0 (25-23, 21-14).

The third-seeded Dutch duo Raisa Schoon/Emi van Driel led the contingent of European quarterfinalists with their straight-set (21-16, 21-14) win over second-seeded Brazilian pair Thamela Coradello/Anna Karolayne Figueredo.

Poland’s Julia Gierczynska/Patrycja Jundzill bounced back from their opening set loss to oust top-seeded Chinese pair Cao Shuting/Zeng Jinjin 2-1 (15-21, 21-13, 15-6), while Russia’s Mariia Bocharova/Maria Voronina of Russia defeated Ukraine’s Kateryna Dashevska/Sofia Rylova 2-0 (21-13, 23-21).

Spain’s Daniela Alvarez/Tania Moreno Matveeva and Switzerland’s Mara Betschart/Celine Baumann produced respective straight-set triumphs against USA’s Maya Harvey/Megan Kraft (21-18, 21-12) and Thailand’s Pawarun Chanthawichai/Thatsarida Singchuea 2-0 (21-19, 22-20).
